Remarkable and bizarre notes about Egypt by early travellers
"Apropos of harems: An amusing incident happened to Mr. and Mrs. Gorham and their friend, Miss Cox, guests at our hotel. They were told that one passport would suffice for all three on their recent trip through Palestine. Later they discovered on examination that it was made out in true Oriental fashion: "Gorham Pasha and harem", which resulted in somewhat mixed feelings in the whole trio as to just who was who."
Most of the following quotations were collected (with permission of the author) from a lovely book by Martin R. Kalfatovic, Nile notes of a howadji: a bibliography of travelers' tales from Egypt, from the earliest time to 1918 (Metuchen, N.J. [etc.] : Scarecrow Press, 1992. - XXXVI, 427 p. : ill. ; 23 cm ISBN 0-8108-2541-4). We hope to expand this page in due time with other (and more recent) lovely remarks from travellers in that extraordinary country. Do you have one? Send it to us (ccer@ccer.nl)!
