International Award for Egyptian Treasures
The CD-ROM Egyptian Treasures in Europe has been awarded a silver medal at the Festival of Audio-visual productions of the International Council of Museums (ICOM, organ of UNESCO), held in Budapest from 22 to 25 November 2000. There were 50 entries for the competition from all over the world.
The CD-ROM is produced by the Centre for Computer-aided Egyptological Research (CCER) in collaboration with 10 European Museums. The prize-winning CD-ROM presents 100 Egyptian Highlights from each of the participating museums, accompanied by extensive information and top-quality images. One remarkable feature is that all the information on the CD-ROM is provided in seven different languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish), thus making it accessible to a wide, interested public, all over the world.
The CD-ROM forms the introduction to the series "Egyptian Treasures in Europe". Each volume deals with 1500 Egyptian objects from one of the participating collections. In 1998, the project was selected from 228 proposals by the European Commission as the best example of innovative production in the domain of cultural heritage and received a grant. The prize-winning CD-ROM is the first result of the project.
The initiator of the project and director of CCER, Prof. Dirk van der Plas, was present to receive the award.
The prize-winning CD-ROM and those volumes of "Egyptian Treasures in Europe" that have been published so far are available directly through the Internet site www.EgyptianTreasures.org.
